Weekenders: Tulum

After a long east coast winter we were craving a moment of sunshine and time on the beach. Chasing summer always seems like a fine idea as the weather becomes less than appealing. When it comes to tropical escapes New Yorkers seem to love what the small town of Tulum, Mexico has to offer. Through word of mouth from our friends and fellow travelers, we heard of the magical healing quality a few days on the beaches of Tulum can inspire.

When planning this visit, rest, relaxation and recharging were our top priorities as we're heading into Spring. To work in a bustling city like New York, it’s important to keep in mind the health of our mind and bodies in order to operate for the long haul.  Peaceful moments in hammocks and outdoor daybeds allow us to hear the gentle crashing waves and other soothing sounds the ocean has to offer. Daily doses of fresh fish from the sea, a couple of juices and a few shots of mezcal helps let your body know it’s time to be at ease. Tulum is truly a place to visit to help restore and find a moment to yourself.

Stay / Nest Tulum

When researching travel accommodations we are constantly keeping our eyes peeled for a unique experience. We love to feel a part of a community and acclimate to our surroundings. Nest is a small boutique property we discovered on one of the most beautiful stretches of the Mexican Caribbean. The beachfront collection of individual styled bungalows are furnished impeccably with locally sourced artisanal home goods and decor. We only wish we factored in a couple of days to visit these artisanal towns to scoop up something pretty for our own homes.

The minimalistic design and stunning architecture creates an inviting atmosphere that almost makes you feel as you are visiting a friend's beach house. An open air shared living room is available to all guests to enjoy breakfast and cozy lounges. The staff at Nest is attentive, welcoming and always available to help you make daily plans. It was really special to feel like you made a new friend and home away from home in this paradise after considering countless options...Nest was exactly what we hoped to find for our first experience in Tulum. We could have stayed planted at the property our whole stay and hearts would have been filled with happiness.

Experience / Coqui Coqui

Don’t worry we eventually left the beaches at Nest, we had to eat lunch of course! Coqui Coqui came highly recommended as a place to visit for a mid-day snack and for the varying options of fragrances from their in-house perfumery. For a really satisfying morning coffee, the café at Coqui Coqui may be your best option. They make a delicious coffee smoothie that was delicious and indulgent vacation treat. For perfect gauzey summer cover-ups, caftans and authentic, hand-made sun hats definitely visit the shop on grounds. You will leave looking and smelling like the beach.

Ceviché / Be Tulum

After a long morning at the beach, we always opted for a light mid-day snack before embarking on a hunt for a dinner spot. Be Tulum’s Mexican ceviché came to us highly recommended and it did not disappoint. Ceviché with a side of guacamole, some warm tortilla chips and a pina colada is just the fix for beachside snack. The grounds of Be Tulum are gorgeous and eating ceviché under the blue skies with your toes in the sand is exactly what we were looking for when it comes to lunch.

Eat / Nomade

For dinner on the beach, Hotel Nomade is the place to watch the sunset and enjoy a fresh fish dinner from their fish market. This popular fish market inspired restaurant is a tribute to the joys of life by the sea. We suggest splitting a whole fish for two. Ask your server for what’s on special.

Nightlife / Gitano

Gitano just makes you feel all kinds of jungle sexy. Firstly it’s located on the jungle side of the beach town stretch so it’s the most authentic tropical decor we have seen yet. The whole space is an exotic plant filled wonderland with a touch of disco ball reflection perfection. You will find dinner and dancing in the jungle at Gitano. We stopped in for a couple of cocktails that were on point. The beautiful crowd, handsome bartenders and excellent drinks make it easy to have a sultry night on the town.
